Indian Stock Market Timings: Pre-Open, Live Session and Closing
Index Tracker team · 4 November 2026 · 4 min read
NSE and BSE follow the same daily schedule for stocks. All times are Indian Standard Time (IST), Monday to Friday, except exchange holidays.
The trading day
- 9:00–9:15 — Pre-open session. Orders are collected (roughly 9:00–9:08) and an opening price is matched for each stock.
- 9:15–15:30 — Normal market. Continuous live trading.
- After 15:30 — The official closing price is set from the weighted average of trades between 15:00 and 15:30, followed by a short post-close session.
Why the opening can jump
News that came out overnight, such as global moves, results or policy announcements, is priced in during the pre-open. That's why the Nifty can open well above or below the previous close. This is called a gap up or gap down.
How the tracker follows the clock
- The status pill at the top shows NSE as pre-open, open or closed, based on IST.
- While NSE is open, prices refresh every 5 seconds. Outside market hours they refresh every 30 seconds, since Indian prices don't change.
- Global markets and commodities trade in other time zones, so they keep moving when NSE is closed.
