Nifty Sectoral Indices Explained: Bank, IT, Pharma, Auto and More

Index Tracker team · 4 November 2026 · 7 min read

The Nifty 50 tells you how the market did overall. Sector indices tell you which part of the market did the work. On many days a few sectors rise sharply while others fall, and the headline index barely moves.

Major sectors right now

The main sector indices

  • Nifty Bank: the largest and most liquid listed banks. It carries a big share of the Nifty 50's weight and has its own very active options market.
  • Nifty Financial Services: banks plus insurers, lenders (NBFCs) and other financial firms.
  • Nifty IT: software and IT services exporters. Often moves with the US dollar and US tech demand.
  • Nifty Pharma and Healthcare: drug makers, hospitals and diagnostics. Often seen as defensive.
  • Nifty Auto: carmakers, two-wheelers and parts makers. Sensitive to monthly sales data and fuel prices.
  • Nifty FMCG: everyday consumer goods. Usually steadier than the market.
  • Nifty Metal and Energy: tied closely to global commodity prices.
  • Nifty Realty: property developers. Sensitive to interest rates.

Why sectors move differently

  • Interest rates: banks and real estate react most to rate expectations.
  • Currency: a weaker rupee helps exporters like IT and pharma.
  • Commodities: metal and energy stocks follow global prices for steel, aluminium and crude oil.
  • Consumer demand: FMCG and auto move on rural and urban spending trends.

Using a heatmap to read the day

A heatmap colours each index by today's % change: green for up, red for down, stronger colour for bigger moves. One glance shows whether the rally is broad or narrow.

Defensive vs cyclical

FMCG, pharma and IT are often called defensive, because demand for them holds up when the economy slows. Banks, autos, metals and realty are cyclical: they tend to do best when growth picks up. If defensives lead while cyclicals fall, the market is often being cautious.
